Somatic Trauma Resolution
Somatic Trauma Resolution (STR)
STR will give you a practical, applicable understanding of how the nervous system is affected by trauma, and how best to heal it. See below for Training Schedule and FREE Lecture Demonstrations. A new training begins April 25-27.

Somatic Trauma Resolution is an effective, creative, safe and efficient way to heal the physiological and behavioral effects of trauma and overwhelm, be it recent or from the past. The work is sensation-based and body-centered. It teaches the practitioner how to control the activation level in the client’s nervous system in a way that allows discharge of trauma-bound (adrenaline-charged) energy that is binding up the system and causing disturbances at every level.

Students learn to work with uncompleted movements and expressions, support for the younger self in family dynamics, orienting responses, softening and slowing down of impacts, gestalt therapy and other communication approaches that are combined with STR, connecting emotions, intrusive or resourcing images, sounds, smells, embedded or emerging resources, and pieces of history to the body in a way that transforms trauma into empowerment and healing on all levels. The training begins with Resourcing and extensive Boundary work to build resiliency in the nervous system.

Trauma is defined as anything that is overwhelming to the nervous system of an individual, which may include birth, drugs, surgery, accidents and injuries, emotional or physical shock, abuse, or more ordinary experiences. It is not so much what happened as how it affected the nervous system. Practitioners are taught variations in approach for specific kinds of experience, which enhances practitioner skill, confidence and creativity.

STR is based on Somatic Experiencing®, in which Porter is certified, but it is deeply informed by principles and energetic phenomena from Polarity Therapy and the Craniosacral System, which makes it a great fit for PHA. Porter references these phenomena as she teaches.

STR can be used as a separate modality or integrated naturally with bodywork, movement and psychotherapeutic processes, in person or by phone or Skype. We also encourage and invite emergency and medical workers to learn these skills, which include first aid and how to reduce Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD symptoms addressed include poor digestion, breathing, pain, sleep problems, reenactment of the trauma, rigidity, dissociation, anxiety, panic, relationships, and acute and chronic conditions.

The STR Course

This STR Course
This is a rigorous course that requires reading emailed materials ahead of each module, and using each practice protocol on several practice clients between modules so that you are ready for the next module. You will also be supported to practice with your classmates between modules. Although some students choose to take only the first two modules (Level 1) we recommend that you arrange your life so that you can attend fully, every module in this series, because the learning is progressive. There is no guarantee that the course will continue to be taught in Los Angeles after this training cycle. Those that do have to miss a module can arrange to view DVDs of similar material and do make-up sessions/work, but that is not nearly as good as being there, where your practice sessions are supervised and you have many opportunities to work through your own trauma patterns. Some students will need to get more than the required two private sessions to work through their own issues. These sessions may be from the instructor, teaching assistants, graduates of the STR program or Somatic Experiencing® Practitioners. Porter continues to mentor many of her students after graduation.

Certification requirements: Besides attendance, minimum of two private sessions; 40 Logged Sessions with practice clients; 4 session reports that show your process as well as the client’s response.

for more about the course, see description of modules below and Sharon’s web site: HealthWaveInstitute.com, including downloadable Brochure.
